"Sacrifices mentioned here do not necessarily mean that we need to go through a period of suffering, but rather a process of changing our life's outlook. Buddhist teachings mention how desire and ignorance lie at the root of all suffering. By tuning down our desires, we may be on a journey to discover a spiritual enlightenment in harmony with the planet. Another mistake we make when talking about continuing economic growth is that we often equate it to human wellbeing. We think matter of factly that economic growth means an increase in the human standard of living. However, this runs the risk of replacing our end goal of increased human prosperity with one means of achieving it, which is economic growth to the point that we pour all our resources into cranking numbers, such as GDP, but never question if it actually does improve our lives. I think degrowth offers a new way of thinking, an avenue of self-reflection and making the necessary corrections." –Yansong Li, co-host on this episode
